Nothing lasts forever, not even something as permanent as a tattoo. I remember when I was younger my mom always warned me against getting a tattoo because it’s “forever”. I was going to get one anyway, all I learned from her was I better pick something I can handle staring at “forever”. I have 7 now so clearly I had options.
Some designs are small, some are big, and I have two quotes on my back with fonts I chose myself. What I wish my mom would have told me is that, “it’s forever but it won’t look good forever.” Tattoos fade over time and that’s what a lot of people don’t consider when going for those bright colors or contrast on their designs. Of course other factors play in part like how good of a job the artist does, wearing sunscreen, and tattoo after care.
That being said, tattoo artists also recommend touch ups every few years, which a lot of us forget or fail to do (guilty!). So if you’re reading this considering getting your first or next tattoo, take a look at these 21 examples of tattoos fading overtime and then possibly rethink your idea, design, and placement.
